Attempting to see the light thru the tears....

Tita Peachy and Me :)
The month of July was supposed to be a glorious month filled with celebrations of life, love, and the pursuit of art. Unfortunately, things took a different turn with July. As much as I would want to hate July, and I have every right to, I won't. I will not survive this lifetime with hate inside me. I must be able to bring out the happiness somehow. Therefore, I will be strong and carry on...

I promise you all that I will have a cheery side to this blog at some point next week. But right now, I really need to dedicate this post to my beautiful, most wonderful aunt, May Meo-Martino, aka Tita Peachy.

Tita Peachy posing as usual :)

My aunt always had the uncanny ability to light up a room. She would saunter in, say in a loud sing-song voice, "HELLLLLLOOOOO!!!!!!" and come in with a big smile and light in her eyes. The life of any party, I always say :)

So pretty with her sunglasses on :)

When I was little she came from the Philippines to live with me and my parents. I thought she was so pretty!
My Mom, little Ro, and Tita Peachy, circa 1979 (?)

And super stylish and photogenic too! Always ready with a pose and smile :)

What a fashionista!

I seriously think that my gorgeous aunt started the Loop Rock Girl Revolution :)

Her family consisted of her husband, James, and her two kids, Kathleen and Jimmy.

Kathleen, Uncle James, Tita Peachy, and Jimmy. They clean up real good ;)

Tita Peachy has so much love and strength in her heart, soul, and body, that I seriously thought she can conquer the world..... Even cancer.....

The ever beautiful bride. This was taken when Tita Peachy and Uncle James renewed their vows.

Three years ago Tita Peachy was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. When she was told me her diagnosis I was devastated. How can this be? She was the healthiest out of all of my aunts and uncles. She was put on chemotherapy and radiation right away and her mastectomy was scheduled. I took time off of work to be with her at the hospital during her major operation.

Tita Peachy minutes before being taken away for surgery. Still with a smile on her face.

After her surgery we thought everything was over with the cancer. We all thought that she beat this awful disease and that she can start living her life again. Back to her old self. A little different, but still the same.

Her hair stated growing back in. It was so soft :)

Unfortunately it wasn't the case. The cancer kept on coming back, everywhere in her body. But my Tita Peachy still fought on. She wouldn't let this beat her. She would continue to fight this disease and fight it with all her being.

The best part of this is that she didn't let it discourage her. She still continued to dress up and look pretty. She still went out and traveled everywhere her little heart desired. She still walked in a room with a ready pose, the effervescent light in her eyes, and a big smile on her face. With or without her wig :P

She was such an inspiration with her fight against this awful disease. I've learned a lot from her during this time. Never hold a grudge. Smile no matter what. Love with all your heart. Always look pretty no matter where you are or what you do. Appreciate every day. And most importantly, just be kind. Kindness is key to all happiness. Even when you feel like it's not worth it, or that it goes unappreciated. You feel a sense of a happy release and you will end up feeling better.

One of the last days I got a chance to spend with Tita Peachy we were at the hospital. With her liver failing from all the radiation and pain meds she still had a smile on her face and weathered the storm. I stayed as late as I could because I wanted to spend as much precious time I had with her. Before I left, she wanted to was get all dolled up and have an impromptu photo shoot. She asked if I had a camera, and of course I ALWAYS HAVE A CAMERA.... So I waited patiently while my Aunt Miriam fixed her wig and put on make up. She was already dressed in a snazzy velour jumpsuit. I took photos of her and with her family and friends with her. She was still oh so beautiful.

A week later, on my 35th birthday, Tita Peachy's amazing spirit left her tired body. She died peacefully in her home surrounded by her family.  According to my Aunt Miriam, she had a little smile on her face when she breathed her last breath.

The next day I had my monthly art show with Escapism at Maya Essence. I decided to put a little memorial for Tita Peachy with a few photos of her and I along with a small little blurb about the dedication piece.

"This is my aunt, May Meo-Martino. I call her Tita Peachy. She was the light in our eyes, the smile on our face, and gave us so much love. Sadly, she passed away on my birthday yesterday. She fought super hard to beat breast cancer. She desperately wanted that one extra day. My birthday wish was for her to no longer suffer from pain ever again. Happily, my wish was granted. Rest In Paradise, Tita Peachy.

<3 - Ro   AKA Weng :)"

I love you!

Anything Goes......Art Show :)

Me and Ali :)

Last month's art show was called, "Anything Goes...."  And in all honesty, it was pretty true to the title :)

Piotr and Kelly :)
I got my drink and my two-step!

We had some amazing new artists that participated this time around as well :)

Julita Danielewicz

Pitor Kuczaj

And of course, the regular artists brought some amazing work.
Alex Puryear

Kym Thomas

Juan Corona

Unfortunate and surprising for me, I didn't bring of my digital cameras. I did bring a Minolta x-700 slr that I recently found at work. I'm still in the process of testing it out. I also had some pretty old film in the camera. Some of the photos came out pretty good. Others did not fair so well (Piotr's photo of his artwork came out really light). All in all, the evening went well. We all had lots of fun :)

The good news is that we now have 3 shows set up for the next 3 months. Woohoo!!! Even better news is that we have finally come up with a name to call us group of local artists. We are now called Escapism. I like the sound of it :) We have a website that's still in the early stages, but if you would like to check it out, here it is: www.escapismchicago.com. Check on us periodically to keep posted with our comings and goings.

So happy everything is coming together :)

Animals of Sea World

Me making out with the fishes :)

I had this opportunity to fly out to Orlando for a few days. So I jumped at it and ran...well, more like flew...

One of the places I got a chance to go to was Sea World. I was able to take some amazing photos of the animals inside and outside of the water.

Beautiful flamingos taking a snooze.

A smiling (i know it's not really smiling) sting ray :)
A very spikey sea urchin.
A puffin :D

A real Florida gator!

And how can anyone ever go to Sea World without checking out a few of the main attractions? So I got a chance to catch a few shows :)

Performing seals/sea lions.
A very theatrical dolphin show.
And how can you not see Shamu?
Some time during my visit to Sea World I came across a big hunk of amazingness and fell in love. Her name is Sara.

Sara the Manatee :)
I seriously wanted to take her home with me. Not exactly sure how Simon or Becca would appreciate me bringing home an enormous mammal such as Sara. Alas I left her there. She seemed happy and content. But I seriously think that Simon would enjoy riding on her back every once in a while :)

At least I got a chance to have my face plastered on the big jumbo screen after Shamu performed :)

Do you see me? I'm on the second top to the left :)

Analogue photos with friends

Me trying to be magical :) Blackberry phone. April 2011.

Once upon a time in the month of March I've been feeling kind of low. So I decided to hang out with my friend Jonah one day and my cousin Laura on another day and just went around taking photos.

With Jonah I had my wonderful and very heavy Argus C3 Rangefinder camera. I call him Auggie :)
Ain't Auggie a handsome devil? Blackberry phone. Not exactly sure when I took this pic...

He's a heavy beast of a camera that was built in the 1940's. I was shopping at a Salvation Army one day with my friend and fellow photog Ali and that's where I found him. I heard him calling out my name, begging me to pick him up and take him home with me. Although he was kind of dusty, he was very trustworthy in taking photos. I did have to look up online to figure out how to take pictures with him because I seriously felt like I was tearing apart the rolls of film, but after a few tries I finally figured it out. And now look at the awesomeness that we both we able to capture...

A week or so after hanging out with Jonah, I went out playing with my cameras with my cousin Laura in the northern suburbs of Chicago. I brought my little Samsung point and shoot and I had another film camera. I found this little love bug when I went to a second hand store. It's a cute little pocket size Canon 35mm "point and shoot." We went to a forest preserve and I let Laura use the digital while I used the film camera. This time I used black and white film.

After our moment of walking along a muddy path and some tree hugging Laura and I decided to take a trip to the nearest mall. She needed to buy some sunglasses. 'Lo and behold, we find an awesome unicorn hat! She needed to buy it so whenever she was feeling down she could wear the magical thing and be happy :)

Oh yeah, she did get sunglasses too. The day wasn't a total wash :)

Catching up on blog.....oops!

Me and Aive at Poker Run for Bailey! April 2011. Canon 20d

So uh yeah....no excuse for me not updating the blog. I have been super busy with fundraisers, art shows, birthdays, work, and life. Still, no excuse!

The month of April really was a whirlwind of artistic endeavors. In the beginning of the month I finally received my awesome business cards from Moo.com. The are AMAZING!!!! And they fit me and my, "all good things come in small packages," personality!

All of these photos are mine! Taken with both digital and 35mm film cameras.

Then, I had the honor (and duty) to take photos at my niece Bailey's fundraiser. My beautiful mini me niece Bailey has this opportunity of a life time to travel to Australia this summer as a Student Embassador for the People to People program. Color Auntie Jealous!!! But, who am I to not help raise some funds for this amazing trip. Her parents and their friends organized this fundraiser where they opened up their houses, had food, booze, and lots of gambling. All the money raised went to Bailey's trip.

My mini me Bailey on her 11th birthday :) March 2011. Blackberry phone camera.
Towards the end of the month I had an art show at Maya Essence. The date landed on Earth Day so I called it Earth Day Art Show ( I know...so original right?).  Hey, it worked and we had an amazing turn out!

Earth Day Art Show. April 2011. Canon 20d

The artists that participated with the Earth Day Art Show had to showcase recycled art, affects of people population, or nature themed art.

Here's my stuff! I chose my bug photos :)

Kym Thomas

Dave Parker
Dave ParkerDa

Alison Downs

I'm so happy that I get to do this on a regular basis. It's the best!

Stay tuned for my goings on for the month of May. I already have stuff lined up :)
